There is increasing recognition that health at older ages is influenced by various factors over the life course. Yet, survey data to study such questions are rare and existing statistical approaches have restrictions. The Seminar shows how retrospective life history data from the HRS-family surveys offer opportunities to study life course influences on healthy aging, and how life history data can be analyzed by the means of sequence analyses. Specifically, the presentation shows how different characteristics and types of employment histories have long-term consequences on health and well-being at older ages, and how employment histories differ between countries, sex and socioeconomic position.
